About Me
Lee Knight, who brings “books alive” with song, dance, and play, is the consummate performer-with a background in theatre, dance, music, and voice-inspiring in children a zeal for stories and learning. Her inspirational music for kids brings excitement to those who hear her, creating a motivational focus for reading and education.
As a native New Yorker, Lee performed with the American Ballet Theatre Company as a child, then went on to study acting at The Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute through New York University’s School of the Arts (BFA). At NYU Lee appeared in several musicals as a singer, dancer, actress and choreographer.
While at NYU, Lee also taught acting, singing, and dance at The Long Beach Theatre Guild’s School where she choreographed, wrote, and directed musical productions.
Lee studied voice privately with Jim Carson for 13 years and now teaches his wonderful “natural” method of singing. Lee taught voice at The Sam Ash Music Institute in New York City and Edison, New Jersey and now teaches privately at her home in East Northport, New York. Many of her former students front their own bands and several have gone on tour, one especially with Enrique Iglesias as his back-up singer, performing a duet with him.
Lee has extensive experience as a singer and keyboard player for private parties, restaurants, and clubs performing with numerous wonderful musicians. Lee currently works as a freelance musician in the tri-state area.
Lee was a regular at Borders Books & Music and the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington for several years, performing music and story telling for the very young.
In the winter of 2002, Lee directed South Pacific at John Glenn High School in Elwood, New York.
Lee and two of her four sisters piloted the Books Alive workshop for 13 third grade classes in Jesup, Georgia. It was a huge success combining, poetry, art, music, staging, and of course promoting the love of reading!
Lee implemented a 45-minute workshop where she teaches an original song to a children’s book using lyric sheets, story telling with figurines and puppets involving acting and expression, a reading recognition exercise and a little drawing at the end.
